IMEC SmartZone CEO joins MTEC SmartZone
Congratulations to Ray Johnson, the new CEO of Innovation Marquette Enterprise Corporation (IMEC) SmartZone! Ray will be working 5 days per month as a CEO in residence for MTEC. Ray’s experience starting and selling two high tech companies, raising $35 million in funds and teaching entrepreneurship in Boulder, Colorado will be very valuable skills for our team. We are excited to work with Ray to expand the economy and support technological innovations in the Upper Peninsula!
Next time you visit the Michigan Tech Lakeshore Center, be sure to check out our new sign on the front of the building! Our office location at the Lakeshore Center houses Dematic, Jackson, and Systems Control. It's also the main office for our CEO, administrative services and marketing.
LeClaire Geoservices Work Published
Steve LeClaire, President of LeClaire GeoServices, recently had his surveying worked published in two books. His plat overlay work, featured in both books, give geographic context to the historical snapshots laid out by the author. The Lost Grade and Alston, both written by Timothy Seppanen, bring readers back to the 1800s, into the days of Upper Peninsula mining.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Systems Control engineering office in the Lakeshore Center is planned for October 30th at 2pm. The office opened in May of 2015 and now has 11 employees, 7 of which are student interns. This office utilizes Mechanical and Electrical Engineers as well as CAD Designers for projects at the main office in Iron Mountain.
Since July 2015 (our new fiscal year), we have helped create 3 new companies:
Carl Kieranen, Inventor Pathways LLC
Weijie Gau, Panacea Tutoring
Jacob Hebert, Kosbase International
To reach our goal of 7 new companies per year, we will be holding more pitch events and begin a new SmartStart session early 2016. If you or someone you know has the next big technology and is interested in starting a company, we can help!
The Michigan Tech Career Fair has been growing for years. Each semester, the attendance number seems to hit some sort of record. This year was no exception. The Career Fair took place on September 29th at the Student Development Complex at Michigan Tech. We saw over 370 companies with about 1,300 recruiters come through the doors, not to mention the over 4,000 students looking for jobs.
MTEC SmartZone co-hosted the hospitality suite and after-hours event for recruiters. During those events, we collected contact information from over 300 recruiters. The week after the career fair, we sent out an email to those recruiters. The results were amazing! The open rate on the email was 50%, which is more than we've had in the past. We even reached Canada, Germany and Japan!
We are very happy with our brand's reach and are continuing to work hard to create even more jobs!
Equity Funding and Investor Panel Discussion
On September 24th, Skip Simms from Ann Arbor Spark and Jody Vanderwel from Grand Angels held a panel discussion for us and our clients on equity funding and angel investor neworks. The event took place at the Lakeshore Center with about 25 people participating. Later that night, we held an event at the Magnuson Hotel for investors interested in joining the Innovation Shore Angel Network. Anyone interested in joining the network must be an accredited investor and invest a minimum dollar amount into each deal.
