HANCOCK, Michigan (November 7, 2011) – The Entrepreneur Support Center (ESC) opened last spring to provide local entrepreneurs with an office and mentors to guide them. The ESC, located on the sixth floor of the Jutila Center, was made possible through a Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) grant and collaboration between MTEC SmartZone and Finlandia University business incubators.
HOUGHTON, Michigan (November 2, 2011) – Michigan Technological University students Travis Beaulieu and Joel Florek are semi-finalists in the Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition. Beaulieu and Florek will compete in Ypsilanti, Michigan, beginning November 16 for the $25,000 grand prize. The team will present with their business idea, AsfalisMed.
HOUGHTON, Michigan (October 31, 2011) – Michigan Technological University’s School of Business and Economics and Central Michigan University are partnering in the 2012 New Venture Competition – one of the nation’s top business plan competitions. The competition will culminate on March 30, 2012, in Mount Pleasant, Michigan when business plans are presented and judged. Cash prizes of $30,000 for first place, $10,000 for second place and $5,000 for third place will be awarded toward business start-up and launch.
HOUGHTON, Michigan (October 27, 2011) – MTEC SmartZone gave away a new iPad2 and iPod Touch to two Michigan Technological University students last week. With an increasing focus on developing student relationships, MTEC SmartZone was pleased to present students Allison Kay Strome and Trent Sturos with their new Apple products. Following MTEC SmartZone’s participation in a series of Michigan Tech student-oriented events – including Taste of Houghton, Community Expo, New Venture Kick-off and Career Fair – the giveaway was another way to capture students’ attention.
HOUGHTON, Michigan (October 24, 2011) – The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) held three ‘think’ sessions in 1999, aimed to prevent the state from becoming part of the ‘rust belt.’ One of the meetings was held in Houghton.The eventual result would be the creation of 15 SmartZones throughout Michigan, including MTEC SmartZone.
HANCOCK, Michigan (October 20, 2011) – MTEC SmartZone company Consistacom recently received a patent for their method and system for automatically generating flow charts for calls to a call center. This patent is a competitive step forward for Consistacom. As an MTEC SmartZone Company, Consistacom received resources and support throughout the patent process.
