Leinonen earns global business credential to help companies expand internationally

HOUGHTON, Michigan (April 16, 2014) – MTEC SmartZone has a special interest in helping local companies succeed in international markets. This brings dollars in from outside the United States creating local jobs and fueling the economy.

MTEC SmartZone Program and Finance Director Jonathan Leinonen recently earned the Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) credential from the National Association of Small Business

International Trade Education (NASBITE) International. The NASBITE CGBP certification provides a benchmark for competency in global commerce and demonstrates his ability to help MTEC SmartZone companies conduct global business.

Leinonen is helping companies work through global business management, global marketing, supply chain management and trade finance. “Many companies have the ability to export, they just don’t do it because they feel it’s too complicated,” Leinonen said. “This certification is one more tool in MTEC SmartZone’s portfolio of resources to help companies grow.”

Leinonen has already been working with GS Engineering on exciting new manufacturing developments. GS Engineering President Glen Simula said, “Jon’s professional guidance with business development and marketing of GS Manufacturing’s forestry winch has been extremely helpful. Manufacturing and selling a product is a new endeavor for GS Engineering, and we rely on outside professionals to help guide us.”

In addition to his work with GS Engineering and other local companies, Leinonen assisted in developing the Finnish-American Chamber of Commerce for Upper Michigan. The Chamber resulted from MTEC SmartZone’s sponsorship of the FinnFest USA 2013 Business and Technology Forum. MTEC SmartZone received funding from Michigan Economic Development Corporation for the sponsorship. The forum was attended by local companies, community leaders, Finnish diplomats and officials. Leinonen is among the newly elected Chamber members and will assist with arranging point-to-point business relationships overseas.

MTEC SmartZone CEO Marilyn Clark said, “I am incredibly pleased that we are able to provide this service to help companies take their businesses to the next level. Exporting allows companies to grow their sales, diversify their client base, and become more competitive.”
