MTEC SmartZone Announces Marilyn Clark as New CEO

HOUGHTON, Michigan (December 8, 2011) – MTEC SmartZone Board of Directors announces today Marilyn Clark as Chief Executive Officer. The local experienced business woman will lead MTEC SmartZone through its next phase of growth.

Board President and Executive Director of Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance (KEDA), Phil Musser states, “Marilyn’s background in management and operations makes her uniquely qualified to lead MTEC SmartZone into our next phase of growth.” He added, “She brings international experience to the area and passion for Keweenaw economic development.”

Clark has been leading MTEC SmartZone’s strategic planning team to develop a ten-year vision, which she will unveil and present at a KEDA member meeting on January 11. Clark will start her new full-time position on January 16. However, she has been acting as Interim CEO at MTEC SmartZone since September, giving her the opportunity to understand day-to-day operations.

Currently Assistant Professor of Management at Finlandia University, Clark made the difficult decision to leave the classroom for industry. “I love teaching and watching students learn and grow,” she says, “but, having grown up in Chassell and lived through the mines closing, I know how important jobs are for the Keweenaw. I am really excited about leading MTEC SmartZone in a new direction to impact job creation and economic development in the Keweenaw.”

A graduate of Michigan Technological University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Masters in Business Administration, Clark also taught Human Resources at the University. She served as President of the local Michigan Tech Alumni Association chapter and is a member of Michigan Tech President’s Council of Advisors. Her relationship with both universities and extensive professional career are invaluable to MTEC SmartZone’s next stages of growth.

Clark’s leadership experience includes serving as Operations Manager at Fortune 500 Company Cummins Engine. She has also consulted local companies Talon Research, IR Telemetrics and Midwest Loan. As Sales Director for local technology company Consistacom, Clark developed an effective marketing strategy that significantly increased sales. She closed large customer deals up to $1 million during her tenure at Consistacom.

She resides in Hancock with her husband Ken and daughter Jackie, a nursing student at Finlandia. They also have two sons; Ben, who works as a Technical Account Manager for Google in San Francisco, and Kenneth Ryan, a Sleep Technician in Takoma, MD.
