New U.P. angel investment network provides opportunities for local start-ups

Houghton, MI – March 17, 2015 – Marilyn Clark, MTEC SmartZone CEO, recently announced the official development of a local angel network, Innovation Shores Angel Network LLC, designed to provide start-ups and high-tech U.P. companies in the early stages of development access to capital funds. MTEC SmartZone names Jason Mack VP of Business Development

MTEC SmartZone creates 83 local jobs in 2014

HOUGHTON — 2014 proved to be a very successful year for the MTEC SmartZone.

The local business incubator announced this week that they created 83 jobs last year. They were also recognized by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation for the milestone.

CEO Marilyn Clark says she is very pleased with the results.

“Our growth plan of companies that have been started in the past has far exceeded our projections. So most of the growth of the 83 jobs are really local companies that have added more employees,” Clark said.

Michigan’s Business of the Year Awarded to Calumet-based REL, Inc.

CALUMET, Michigan (December 17, 2014) – The Michigan Energy Innovation Business Council (EIBC) honored Calumet-based REL, Inc., as the state’s Business of the Year at the Michigan Energy Innovators Gala in East Lansing last month. REL, Inc., an advanced materials and process developer, was recognized for its conformable, compressed natural gas storage tank technology currently being developed for natural gas cars and trucks.

REL, Michigan Tech Receive $2.1 Million from Southwestern Energy Company

Michigan Technological University and REL, Inc., a Calumet-based technology company with a focus on material-process development, have been awarded a $2.1-million, three-year investment from Southwestern Energy Company (SWN) of Houston, Texas.

The grant charges an interdisciplinary team of Michigan Tech researchers and REL engineers with designing, fabricating and testing a conformable, compressed natural gas tank for use in light-duty trucks.
