HOUGHTON, Michigan (February 17, 2015) – MTEC SmartZone has strengthened its efforts to create a world-class technology ecosystem with the recent hiring of Jason Mack as Vice President of Business Development. Mack provides one-on-one mentoring to startups to help commercialize their technologies and identify target customers to grow sales.

The local business incubator announced this week that they created 83 jobs last year. They were also recognized by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation for the milestone.
CEO Marilyn Clark says she is very pleased with the results.
“Our growth plan of companies that have been started in the past has far exceeded our projections. So most of the growth of the 83 jobs are really local companies that have added more employees,” Clark said.
CALUMET, Michigan (December 17, 2014) – The Michigan Energy Innovation Business Council (EIBC) honored Calumet-based REL, Inc., as the state’s Business of the Year at the Michigan Energy Innovators Gala in East Lansing last month. REL, Inc., an advanced materials and process developer, was recognized for its conformable, compressed natural gas storage tank technology currently being developed for natural gas cars and trucks.

Michigan Technological University and REL, Inc., a Calumet-based technology company with a focus on material-process development, have been awarded a $2.1-million, three-year investment from Southwestern Energy Company (SWN) of Houston, Texas.
The grant charges an interdisciplinary team of Michigan Tech researchers and REL engineers with designing, fabricating and testing a conformable, compressed natural gas tank for use in light-duty trucks.
